Urolithiasis: Medical and Surgical Management of Stone Disease

Urolithiasis: Medical and Surgical Management of Stone Disease
By Margaret Pearle, Stephen Nakada

* Publisher: Informa Healthcare
* Number Of Pages: 250
* Publication Date: 2009-09-30
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1841846880
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781841846880

Product Description:
Urolithiasis, or stone disease occurs in 7% of women and 12% of men at some point, and these statistics are rising. Furthermore, for those who form a stone, the likelihood of a recurrence is nearly 50% within 5 years of initial diagnosis. Therefore, the need for effective, minimally invasive alternatives for stone eradication and prevention is critical. Because stone disease comprises a large part of any urologist’s practice, a thorough knowledge of the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of stone disease is critical in order to understand and implement treatment strategies to prevent stone formation. Likewise, a working knowledge of the surgical treatments, instrumentation and outcomes is necessary to arm patients with sufficient information to make an informed decision and to provide the appropriate treatment modality for a given stone situation. In Urolithiasis: Medical and Surgical Management, the authors provide a complete guide to the management of stone disease from both a medical and surgical prospective. This book should be an invaluable resource for those who treat stone disease in any capacity, whether surgically or medically, acutely or long-term.

Value Stream Mapping for Healthcare Made Easy

Value Stream Mapping for Healthcare Made Easy
By Cindy Jimmerson, Amy Jimmerson

* Publisher: Productivity Press
* Number Of Pages: 119
* Publication Date: 2009-08-26
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1420078526
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781420078527

Product Description:
In no industry is the concept of quality more essential than it is in healthcare, which is why the lean quality principles learned through the example of the Toyota Production System are so applicable. Two fundamental principles of Toyota’s push for excellence are especially relevant to healthcare: ensuring quality at every step and keeping improvement processes simple enough that they are viable, reproducible, and teachable.

Developed with the input of more than 60 healthcare organizations, Value Stream Mapping for Healthcare Made Easy introduces healthcare managers to the essential method developed by Toyota known as the Value Stream Map (VSM). The first half of the book provides an introduction to VSMs that shows healthcare workers at all levels how to look at any process with eyes that probe all the value-added and non-value-added activities in the delivery of a requested service or product. This will allow all stakeholders the opportunity to evaluate, create, and communicate innovation in their workplace.

The second half reviews real value stream maps at real healthcare facilities created by teams of administrators, managers, physicians, and staff members. Most participants were not experienced with lean thinking and for many this was their first engagement with lean methods. What becomes clear through these examples is the importance of initiating realistic improvements that can quickly demonstrate successful change and encourage even more problem solving.

This ability to be involved with creating a better way to work has been exceptionally well received by workers both at Toyota and now throughout the healthcare industry. Lean thinking involves employees in improving work that is meaningful to them, at a level where they can see and appreciate the changes they have participated in creating. This satisfaction is essential to retaining good workers, as well as to the everyday improvement of safety, patient satisfaction, and affordability.

VSM is a proven high-level view tool that can be used in every aspect of healthcare to identify, understand, and improve processes. Information included illustrates the simplicity and completeness of the tool and describes its applications to staff communication, regulatory documentation, and activities of daily work. The book also highlights simple-to-use data collection and interpretation as part of the VSM process.

A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests: Administration, Norms, and Commentary

A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests: Administration, Norms, and Commentary
By Esther Strauss, Elisabeth M. S. Sherman, Otfried Spreen

* Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
* Number Of Pages: 1240
* Publication Date: 2006-04-06
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0195159578
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780195159578

Product Description:
For the practicing neuropsychologist or researcher, keeping up with the sheer number of newly published or updated tests is a challenge, as is evaluating the utility and psychometric properties of neuropsychological tests in a clinical context. The goal of the third edition of A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests, a well-established neuropsychology reference text, is twofold. First, the Compendium is intended to serve as a guidebook that provides a comprehensive overview of the essential aspects of neuropsychological assessment practice.
Second, it is intended as a comprehensive sourcebook of critical reviews of major neuropsychological assessment tools for the use by practicing clinicians and researchers. Written in a comprehensive, easy-to-read reference format, and based on exhaustive review of research literature in neuropsychology, neurology, psychology, and related disciplines, the book covers topics such as basic aspects of neuropsychological assessment as well as the theoretical background, norms, and the utility, reliability, and validity of neuropsychological tests.
For this third edition, all chapters have been extensively revised and updated. The text has been considerably expanded to provide a comprehensive yet practical overview of the state of the field. Two new chapters have been added: "Psychometrics in Neuropsychological Assessment" and "Norms in Psychological Assessment." The first two chapters present basic psychometric concepts and principles. Chapters three and four consider practical aspects of the history-taking interview and the assessment process itself. Chapter five provides guidelines on report-writing and chapters six through sixteen consist of detailed, critical reviews of neuropsychological tests, and address the topics of intelligence, achievement, executive function, attention, memory, language, visual perception, somatosensory olfactory function, mood/personality, and response bias. A unique feature is the inclusion of tables that summarize salient features of tests within each domain so that readers can easily compare measures. Additional tables within each test review summarize important features of each test, highlight aspects of each normative dataset, and provide an overview of psychometric properties. Of interest to neuropsychologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, and educational and clinical psychologists working with adults as well as pediatric populations, this volume will aid practitioners in selecting appropriate testing measures for their patients, and will provide them with the knowledge needed to make empirically supported interpretations of test results.

Angina: An Atlas of Investigation and Management

Angina: An Atlas of Investigation and Management
By Ian J. Sarembock, Fadi M. Elahdab, David C. Isbell, Michael Ragosta

* Publisher: Clinical Publishing
* Number Of Pages: 120
* Publication Date: 2007-05
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1904392598
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781904392590

Product Description:
Angina is most commonly associated with myocardial ischemia, but may also be symptomatic of valvular heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or uncontrolled high blood pressure. While chronic or stable angina is predictable and relatively easy to manage, it is the sudden and unexpected onset of symptoms in patients with unstable angina that represents the most significant challenge to the clinician, being a risk indicator for acute MI, severe cardiac arrhythmia or even cardiac arrest. Since chest pain can also indicate a number of other less critical conditions, it is important that the clinician can rapidly and accurately determine the true risk status of the patient in each case. In this atlas, the authors guide the reader through the assessment of the patient with chest pain, beginning with the simple physical examination and evaluation of other risk factors that may be present, progressing to non-invasive tests such as EKG and various imaging techniques, and concluding with coronary angiography. The diagnostic value of each of these techniques is compared and appropriate guidance given on evaluating clinical findings.

Transesophageal Echocardiography in Clinical Practice

Transesophageal Echocardiography in Clinical Practice
By Mark Belham

* Publisher: Springer
* Number Of Pages: 124
* Publication Date: 2009-11-08
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1848826206
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781848826205

Product Description:
When imaging a patient’s heart the number of modalities available to choose from seems to be ever increasing and the clinician needs to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each modality in order to best answer the question posed. If more than one modality can answer the question then an appreciation of local expertise and patient preference is needed (although, in general, echocardiography can answer the question and should be the first line investigation).

The first transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) was performed in 1976 (M-mode only) and there were some who doubted that it would find a place in mainstream cardiac imaging. Over the last 30 years the technological advances in TEE have been exponential and have been reflected by its increasing utilization. Currently almost all echocardiography labs undertake TEE and the vast majority of valve operations are performed with TEE guidance.

Those who are active in cardiac imaging know that the modality is unsurpassed because of its spatial and temporal resolution and that it is relatively easy to get good images with minimal training. These same practitioners will also be aware that, for these reasons, there are practitioners who bypass the appropriate training and use TEE as a very blunt diagnostic tool.

The purpose of this book is thus to give practical guidance to those undertaking training in the art of TEE. It is not an exhaustive text to be used for reference but one that should be used in conjunction with hands-on experience. If used correctly it will help in realizing the true potential of TEE.

Moral Acquaintances and Moral Decisions: Resolving Moral Conflicts in Medical Ethics

Moral Acquaintances and Moral Decisions: Resolving Moral Conflicts in Medical Ethics (Philosophy and Medicine)
By Stephen S. Hanson

* Publisher: Springer
* Number Of Pages: 174
* Publication Date: 2009-10-01
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9048125073
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9789048125074

Product Description:
The potential of modern medicine in a pluralistic world leads to the potential for moral conflict. The most prevalent bioethical theories often either overestimate or underestimate the amount of shared moral belief that can be used to address those conflicts. This work presents a means for taking seriously the pluralism in the modern world while recognizing the likelihood of moral “acquaintance” between persons with differing views. It criticizes moral theories that overstate the extent of the problem of pluralism as well as those that imply too much agreement between reasonable moral persons, yet it locates a means for the resolution of many moral conflicts in moral acquaintanceship. Drawing from the work of H. Tristram Engelhardt, Jr., casuists and principle-based theorists, and Erich Loewy and Kevin W. Wildes’s initial development of the concept of moral acquaintanceship, Moral Acquaintances and Moral Decisions is philosophically indepth work with direct applications for decisionmaking in real medical settings. A work in moral theory as well as a source of real world guidance, clinically oriented bioethics professionals as well as students of bioethical theory should find the theory of moral acquaintanceship provided here important to their work.

Glioblastoma is the most malignant brain tumor that still remains incurable. It is such a deadly disease that patients do not survive more than a few months after diagnosis. Our understanding of the histopathology and molecular mechanisms of formation of glioblastoma is rapidly advancing so as to provide us clues for devising rational therapeutic strategies for treatment of this malignancy. It is important that we continue to improve our knowledge about the pathogenesis of this devastating disease and explore new areas to find successful therapeutic strategies.

Various approaches such as sophisticated imaging techniques, improved surgical procedures, ground-breaking strategies for radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, chemoimmunotherapy, and photodynamic therapy are being used for eradicating glioblastoma. Hopefully, this book will be an important source of information on glioblastoma and therefore be highly useful to the students, postdoctoral fellows, principal investigators, and clinicians involved in this field.

* Publication Date: 2008-05-23

* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781402082306

Product Description:
With the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases on the rise as average life expectancy increases, the hunt for effective treatments and preventive measures for these disorders is a pressing challenge. Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis have been termed 'protein misfolding disorders' that are characterized by the neural accumulation of protein aggregates. Manipulation of the cellular stress response involving the induction of heat shock proteins offers a therapeutic strategy to counter conformational changes in neural proteins that trigger pathogenic cascades resulting in neurodegenerative diseases. Heat shock proteins are protein repair agents that provide a line of defense against misfolded, aggregation-prone proteins. This book reviews current progress on heat shock proteins in the brain and their implications for neurodegenerative diseases, neuroprotection, aging and control of life span. Key laboratories from major universities around the world contribute chapters that review present research activity and project the field into the future.

Product Description:
Within a health-care environment of ever-increasing scrutiny and heightened expectations, nurses, physicians, public health scientists, and other health-care professionals must continually explore what works best in patient care based on the best evidence available. The goal of evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing is to promote improved interventions, care, and patient outcomes. Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model and Guidelines depicts three essential cornerstones that form the foundation for professional nursing: practice, education, and research. Nursing practice is the means by which a patient receives nursing care; education reflects the acquisition of the nursing knowledge and skills necessary to become a proficient clinician and to maintain competency; and research provides new knowledge to the profession and enables the development of practices based on scientific evidence. Nurses from The Johns Hopkins Hospital and faculty members from The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing worked in collaboration to develop the practice model in this book. The model and guidelines demystify and facilitate the EBP process for administrators, managers, staff nurses, faculty, and students alike. The practical approach presented here puts EBP within the reach of every nurse and health-care institution.

In addition, it is used by experienced investigators to teach measurement and coding of the ECG in the Core ECG Lab.

The Minnesota Code incorporates standardized measurement rules for ECG waveform features with quantitiative, unambiguous and objective ECG criteria which provide mutally exclusive defined categories of the major ECG findings (both "normal" and "abnormal"), including those representing myocardial necrosis, injury, ischemia, hypertrophy, conduction defects and arrhythmias. Although the Minnesota Code does not provide diagnostic labels, it is understood by clinicians concerned with diagnostic endpoints. The Minnesota Code also ensures that ECG data from national or international studies are comparable in terms of the prevalence and incidence of abnormal findings.

Updated to reflect changes in understanding over the last 20 years, this title provides the benchmark for coding in electrocardiographic applications. The Minnesota Code Manual of Electrocardiographic Findings constitutes an essential source of reference for clinical trials and population-based cardiovascular studies.

Computational Modeling Methods for Neuroscientists

Computational Modeling Methods for Neuroscientists (Computational Neuroscience)
By Erik De Schutter

* Publisher: The MIT Press
* Number Of Pages: 432
* Publication Date: 2009-11-30
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0262013274
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780262013277

Product Description:
This book offers an introduction to current methods in computational modeling in neuroscience. The book describes realistic modeling methods at levels of complexity ranging from molecular interactions to large neural networks. A "how to" book rather than an analytical account, it focuses on the presentation of methodological approaches, including the selection of the appropriate method and its potential pitfalls. It is intended for experimental neuroscientists and graduate students who have little formal training in mathematical methods, but it will also be useful for scientists with theoretical backgrounds who want to start using data-driven modeling methods. The mathematics needed are kept to an introductory level; the first chapter explains the mathematical methods the reader needs to master to understand the rest of the book.

The chapters are written by scientists who have successfully integrated data-driven modeling with experimental work, so all of the material is accessible to experimentalists. The chapters offer comprehensive coverage with little overlap and extensive cross-references, moving from basic building blocks to more complex applications.

Getting the Most Out of Your IV Therapy Flash Cards
Purpose of Flash Cards
You’re on your way to mastering IV therapy vocabulary! Using these flash cards will develop
your ability to focus and achieve deep memory learning. They will help you not only learn
the terminology, but they will help you relate those terms to the nursing content you are
studying. It is important to make a connection between the term, its meaning, and how it
functions in the language of nursing. So I designed the flash cards to allow you to see the
word, read the word (out loud is best), use the word, and associate the word with other
related concepts.
